Jonathan Hodgson

In the premiere episode of The Sport Editorial Podcast, host Jonathan Hodgson sits down with Stockton Heat head coach Mitch Love for an in-depth interview on his vast experiences in hockey, as well as a strong season so far for the Heat.

In this episode, Love reflects on his first season coaching professional hockey with the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, where he has been working with some of the organizations top prospects.

A longtime Western Hockey League player and coach, Love recounts some of his best memories from the WHL. Love was a rugged defenseman and a fan favourite for the expansion Everett Silvertips in 2003-04 who made it all the way to the league finals. He served as the Silvertips captain the next season and later launched his coaching career in Everett, spending six seasons as an assistant coach before landing the head coach position with the Saskatoon Blades.

Love guided the Blades to three straight playoff berths, and in his first season, coached Kirby Dach, who became the third overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks. In the interview, Love also shares about having his jersey number retired by the Silvertips when he came through Everett with the Blades. He also walks through his memories of being an assistant coach for Canada at the 2019-20 World Junior Championships, and winning a gold medal in 2020.

Also in this episode, host Jonathan Hodgson pays recognition to Les Lazaruk, who broadcast career game no. 2000 for the Blades earlier this season.
